Wynton Marsalis is an American trumpeter and composer. One among the most prominent jazz musicians in the modern era he is also one of the best-known instrumentalists in classical music. An African-American, Wynton Marsalis is rather open on matters of race.
Marsalis has made his reputation with a hip, earthy yet sophisticated and personal style. He also has an impressive knowledge of jazz and jazz history. A master in classical trumpet, he has made 16 classical and about 30 jazz recordings. He has been awarded eight Grammys in both of the genres. Marsalis, born in New Orleans, is the second son of jazz pianist and composer Ellis Marsalis. His elder brother, Branford Marsalis, plays tenor and soprano saxophone. Another brother, Delfeayo plays trombone, while the youngest brother, Jason, plays drums. So music runs in the blood.
Marsalis took to the trumpet at the age of six. When he was eight, he became a member of Danny Barker's Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band. When he was 14, he recited Haydn's Trumpet Concerto with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra. At 18, he moved to New York City to attend Juilliard School of Music. In 1980, he became a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and toured with Herbie Hancock next year.
Artist Biography - Wynton Marsalis
Marsalis released a self-titled album in 1982. This was also his debut album. In 1984, he won Grammy awards in both jazz and classical categories. In 1987, Marsalis aided in the foundation of the Jazz at the Lincoln Center program. He is its artistic director to this day. The program began in the form of a week-long classic jazz series. It was fully established in 1991. The department went on to become an independent organization by the same name in July 1, 1996. It has its own board of directors and a repertory company as well as a Jazz Orchestra. He says "We are proud to take our place among the other outstanding organizations in the Lincoln Center family. The action places the uniquely American legacy of swing and blues as a history to be valued, an artistic achievement that is on par with the most magnificent works of Western classical music."
In 1997, Marsalis became the first jazz musician in history to win the Pulitzer Prize for music. He received the award for his jazz oratorio ''Blood on the Fields.'' It dealt with the subject of slavery. He also helped create 2000 television documentary Jazz by Ken Burns. However, the best of Marsalis can be had in the live performances. His concerts are regular sell outs. So, if you want to be at the next concert, get the tickets from an online ticket vendor.
