Winter Dance Party

It was in chilly month of January of 1959, when Buddy Holly, Dion and the Belmonts, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper thought of setting out on a twenty-four day tour, to showcase their talents to the mid-western United States. They started their tour in a bus which was jammed packed with other musicians, the weather dropping to several degrees below zero and what's more the bus had a broken heating system. Well, it seemed the tour was a disaster. Still they didn't lose heart. They continued in their endeavor. They went to frozen towns in the upper Midwest. They were scheduled to play two shows and then head towards Clear Lake, Iowa for their next performance. Because of the chilly weather, everyone was in a foul mood. Holly then told his own group that he would hire a plane from Dwyer's Flying Service in Mason City, Iowa to fly them to Fargo, North Dakota, so that they can be ahead of other musicians.
However when they arrived, Jerry Dwyer wasn't there. They were at wit's end how to continue their tour, when Roger Peterson a young pilot who worked for Dwyer agreed to fly them. Although Peterson was inexperienced, still he agreed to fly them off. Holly, Richardson, and Valens then got into the plane and Peterson started the engine of the four place Beechcraft holly.gif (16699 bytes)Bonanza and took off. But they never reached their destination, because later Dwyer with his team found the plane crashed in a cornfield, eight miles from Clear Lake. This infamous tour was named as the Winter Dance Party and every year is held in the Clear Lake, Iowa, in memory Ritchie Valens, J.P. Richardson, and Buddy Holly.
