The city of West Springfield is located in the state of Massachusetts. West Springfield falls in the Hampden County and is a part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2000 census, the population of the city is estimated at 27,899. It is often referred to as 'West Side' since it lies on the western side of the Connecticut River.

As per the 'United States Census Bureau', the city covers an area of 17.5 square miles, of which 95.50% is land. West Springfield lies to the west of the Connecticut River and to north of the Westfield River. The eastern side of the city is bordered by linear cliffs of volcanic trap-rock that are known as 'East Mountain'. These cliffs are a part of the Metacomet Ridge, which is a mountainous ridge-line that extends from 'Long Island Sound' to nearly the 'Vermont border'.

The city has easy access to various roadways and railroads. As a result, the city is often called the 'crossroads of New England'. The city is also considered a part of the Springfield-Hartford Knowledge Corridor. West Springfield hosts the only cross-state agricultural fair in the country, the Big E. The event is also known as 'The Eastern States Exposition' and is often billed as 'New England's Great State Fair'. The fair is a held every autumn for two weeks and is a state-fair for six New England states, namely Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

West Springfield is also the home of the American Indoor Soccer League club Massachusetts Twisters, which is an accomplished team that has won the regular season in the AISL as well as the league championship.
