Wanda Sykes
Born March 7, 1964 in Portsmouth, Virginia, Sykes graduated from Hampton University in Hampton. In 1987, Sykes participated in a Washington D.C.-area talent competition in which she lost. However that was the event that was instrumental in helping her choose her career; she discovered her knack for comedy. Instead of loosing heart after the competition, Sykes continued to polish her talents at local venues while working as a procurement officer at the National Security Agency (NSA). In 1992 she took a big step; Sykes quit her job ad shifted to New York. Her decision seemed to be right and she got an opportunity to open for Chris Rock at Caroline's Comedy Club. In 1997, she became a part of the writing team of ‘The Chris Rock Show' and the team was selected for four Emmys, and they won one out of it in 1999. Since then there has been no looking back for her, Sykes acted in movies like Pootie Tang and on TV shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm. In 2003, she got her own show on Fox network sitcom, ‘Wanda at Large' however; the show did not last long. The same year her fans could see her in an hour-long Comedy Central special ‘Tongue Untied'. She was a reporter for HBO's ‘Inside the NFL', anchored Comedy Central's well-liked show ‘Premium Blend', and voices a frequent character called ‘Gladys' on Comedy Central's puppet show ‘Crank Yankers'.
She had another short-lived show ‘Wanda Does It' on Comedy Central in which she tries out a range of careers. In 2006, she got a repeating role on the sitcom ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine'; she appeared regularly in the second season. She also supplied voices for the 2006 films ‘Over the Hedge', ‘Barnyard' and ‘Brother Bear 2'. She also can be seen in popular movies like My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Evan Almighty, License To Wed and many more.
Apart from a popular actress, stand up Sykes is also an author. She penned a book of humorous observations on diverse topics ‘Yeah, I Said It', which became quite popular.
