Virginia Symphony
Background- Virginia Symphony was founded in the year 1920. For over eight decades Virginia Symphony has been serving the communities of Hampton Roads with its melodious and enchanting music. The orchestra, over the years has grown into a completely professional ensemble and at present has been recognized as one of the leading, regional symphony orchestras in the nation. The Virginia Symphony when it was formed, was the only orchestra between Baltimore and Atlanta. Then came up Peninsula Symphony Orchestra, the Virginia Beach Pops Symphony. Later the leaders of the community decided that all the three orchestras should be merged into one, so that the orchestra can achieve the high quality in artistic field and also better service could be attained. These can be done by bringing in not only talented musicians but also by collecting financial resources that could be catered for the development of one regional professional orchestra and was named as Virginia Symphony.
Through constant support and efforts, the Virginia Symphony, over the years, have been able to achieve excellence. The orchestras has been led by many famous music directors, which have made the orchestra so famous and popular at the national as well as international level. In the year 1991, on May, JoAnn Falletta was appointed as the eleventh music director of the orchestra. JoAnn Falletta is a famous and nationally acclaimed conductor. Falletta has also been the winner of the Stokowski, Toscanini and Bruno Walter awards for her excellence in music. She also received the Seaver/National Endowment for the Arts Conductor's Award in the year 2002.

Artist Biography - Virginia Symphony

 In the year 2006, the Virginia Symphony celebrated its 15th season. The show was full of brilliant performances under the leadership of Maestro Falletta. Under her skillful and brilliant direction, the orchestra has risen to such heights that the community has been dreaming of. The orchestra has been continually celebrating the artistic heights and has been routinely enjoying the huge round of applause and appreciation of the critics and also of the media.
The orchestra most memorable time was perhaps on August, in the year 2000, when Virginia Symphony was accepted into the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians, thus officially entering the "major league" of symphony orchestras. This meant it joined the ranks of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra to name a few, thus joining over 40 famous and magnificient ensembles in this organization. The orchestras have many achievements tied under its belt. But the most recent, notable achievements for Virginia Symphony was under the leadership of Maestro Falletta. This achievement includes five compact disc recordings which was released at the national level, a performance was carried out by Peter and the Wolf which was aired on National Public Radio, and a mindblowing performance at the Kennedy Center in January, in the year 2000. The performance of the orchestra was commendable. The critics and the media reviewed favorably. The Washington Post said "If the members' work …was any indication of their usual standards, this is a fine ensemble." In the year 1997, the Virginia Symphony enjoyed another accomplishment when it performed for the first time at New York's Carnegie Hall. The show was a huge success and it was also critically acclaimed. The New York Times commented, "The remarkable performance by the Virginia Symphony... was energetic, committed and finely polished."
Every year, Virginia Symphony performs a number of shows, such as 140 Classical, Pops, Family, Education and Outreach concerts, including orchestral support of the acclaimed Virginia Opera, Virginia Ballet, and Virginia Arts Festival. At present the orchestra is recognized as one of the most popular regional orchestras in the nation.
