The city of Virginia Beach is located in the state of Virginia. Virginia Beach is an independent city lying on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. According to the 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city stands at 435,619, making it the most populous city in the state of Virginia and the 41st largest city in terms of population in the United States.

The city is the easternmost of the seven cities of Hampton Roads. As per the United States Census Bureau, Virginia Beach covers a total area of 497.3 square miles, of which about 50% is land and rest is water. The city thrives on its tourism industry and is considered one of the best resorts in the country. Virginia Beach boasts of miles of beach ans hundreds of motels, hotels and restaurants along its oceanfront. Although, tourism is its main industry, the retail industry is also quite popular here. Some major companies have their headquarters in this city, such as 'Lillian Vernon' and 'Stihl'.

Apart from the beaches, a popular tourist spot is the 'Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center'. The aquarium features many aquatic animals, such as sand tiger, nurse and brown sharks, sting rays, sea turtle, jellyfish and octopus aquariums. There are 18 sites in the city, that are on the 'National Register of Historic Places'. Some of them are : The 'Adam Thoroughgood House', the 'Francis Land House', the 'Cape Henry Lights' and the 'Cape Henry Light Station'.

The 'Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheather' is the popular cultural center of the city. The site is a venue for many popular concerts and performances, such as 'Kenny Chesney', 'Gretchen Wilson', 'Coldplay' and 'Ozzfest'. The city is also the venue for the East Coast Surfing Championship and the North American Sand Soccer Championship. Each year, these two events attract teams from all over the world. Golf is another popular sport in this city and there are as many as eleven public golf courses here, such as the Hell's Point Golf Club and Virginia Beach National.
