Vienna Choir Boys
The choir is the contemporary successor of the boys' choirs of the Viennese Court, dating back to the late Middle Ages. Maximilian I of Habsburg wrote a letter on 7 July 1498, directing court officials to engage a singing master, two basses and six boys. That letter was instrumental in establishing the boys' choirs. Slovene, Jurij Slatkonja was appointed the director of the small ensemble.
The choir consisting of fourteen to twenty singers was required to provide musical backup to the church mass. The boys were given substantial musical education, which in the majority cases had an important impact on the rest of their lives, as many boys went on to become professional musicians. Acclaimed composers like Jacobus Gallus, Franz Schubert, and the renowned conductors Hans Richter, Felix Mottl and Clemens Krauss all were at one-point members of the choir. In 1920 the Hofkapelle was disbanded but the tradition of the choir was continued. In 1924 the ‘Vienna Boys' Choir' was formally established and since then it has extended into being a professional music group. Palais Augarten, has been used as the rehearsal venue and boarding school of the ‘Vienna Boys' Choir' since 1948. It is here that the boys study from kindergarten level up to middle school level. The ‘Vienna Boys' Choir' has around 100 choristers aged between ten and fourteen. The boys are divided into four touring choirs, which presents nearly 300 concerts yearly in front of about 500,000 people. Every group tours for about nine to eleven weeks each year. The able and dynamic Dr. Eugen Jesser presently is leading the choir.
