The Vienna Boys' Choir has a history that distinguishes it from all and sundry. It is one of the oldest boys' choirs in the world. They have been a symbol of Austria for more than five hundred years. In 1498, a founding document of Maximilian I invited the first dozen boys to the royal court as members of the court music band that was newly formed. In all these years its been a source of the greatest musicians in different times and periods. Joseph Haydn sang with the choir boys in the chapel of the Hofburg as well as the newly built palace of Sch–nbrunn.

Franz Schubert wrote his first compositions when he was with the court choir boys. The ending of the monarchy came in 1918, with that the choir gave up its old name and the imperial uniform too. In 1924 the "Vienna Boys' Choir" was reformed by rector Joseph Schnitt. From then they have given performances at great concert halls around the world. That is why they are regarded as Austria's "singing ambassadors".

The Vienna Boys' Choir have given famed concerts under many great conductors as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Lorin Maazel, Herbert von Karajan, Carlos Kleiber, Riccardo Muti and Sir George Solti. If you are in Vienna you can be a part of history through the Vienna Boys' Choir's singing of solemn mass in Vienna's Hofburg chapel on every Sunday. From 1948, the tradition has been maintained without an exception.

Today, there are 4 boys' choirs that constantly tour the world. The boys are aged 11 to 14 years. To maintain high level of musical quality they have their own boarding school at Augarten Palace in Vienna. The boys attend school together and receive excellent musical education.
