Thompson – Boling Arena is multi purpose arena of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Thompson Arena was opened at December 3rd , 1987, during the 1987/88 season. This arena is named after B. Ray Thompson and former university president Dr. Edward J. Boling.
It was the largest facility ever built for basketball. The seating capacity was 24,678 until 2007. In 2006, ground was broken for the Pratt Pavilion. It was ready for use in November, but not all exterior construction was finished then. In November 30, 2006, plans were announced to add new renovations to Thompson – Boiling Arena, which included black seats, a center hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments. Also luxury suites and loge seating were added. The arena it is home of the Tennessee Volunteers and Lady Vols basketball teams. The facility hosted the 1989 Southeastern Conference men’s basketball tournament, and also it hosted games of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in 1994 and 1999, and NCAA Women’s Final Four, in 1990.
During the 2006/07 year, the University of Tennessee Men’s Basketball team went 16 – 0 in Thompson – Boiling Arena, and that continued in 2007/08. The Thompson Arena it’s also a concert venue, for many concerts , and can hold up to 25,000. Many artists have performed at the Thompson Arena, including Prince, Shania Twain, Britney Spears, Cher, Hannah Montana etc. Also this arena can be rented for any specific event.
