Before that the arena was home to the Arena Football League Team Minnesota Fighting Pike. The arena was designed by KMR Architects and the construction costed $304 million USD, with capacity of 23,500 for basketball, 19,500 for ice hockey and arena football and 25,500 for concerts.

The management has changed many times, and most recently it was changed from Clear Channel Entertainment to Midwest Entertainment Group in 2004. Target Center underwent a renovation in 2004, and all 19,006 seats were replaced and added 1,500 new seats, makind the arena more fan-friendly. Also the scoreboard was replaced with new one, and the access for fans with disabilities was improved. Target Center was one of the audition locations for the series of American Idol in 2006.

The arena is the host of many memorable WWE events, and also it hosted a WWE Pay PerView in August 1999. It can convert the seats into a theater, known as U.S Bank Theater, with a moveable floor, which can be used for family and Broadway shows too. The arena is across the street from the Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue and Block E, and the new stadium will be located just across Target Center.
