The William A. Shea Municipal Stadium that is usually known as the Shea Stadium or just Shea is a ballpark that is located in New York City. The stadium is in the shape of a circle, with the grandstand that forms a perfect circumference around the field and ends at a very short distance beyond the foul lines. It is the official home to the New York Mets Major League Baseball club since the year 1964. The American ballpark is one of the oldest ballparks in the National League till date. The park is located in the Corona section of the borough of Queens and is right now in its 45th and final season. The last regular season baseball game will be played on September 28 in the year 2008 when the Mets will play the Florida Marlins. Citi field will replace the Shea Stadium in the year 2009. The new stadium is under construction in the parking lot behind Shea's left field. The Shea Stadium will be demolished after the completion of Citi Field.

In the year 1960, the National League agreed to provide a franchise to the owners of the New York franchise in the abortive Continental League, by keeping a condition in front of them, that the city should have a new stadium. Mayor Robert Wagner, Jr. had to personally address all the National League owners and assure them that the city will definitely construct a new park.It was decided that the official name of the stadium would be "Flushing Meadows Stadium" – similar to the name of the public park that is located in the south of Shea – but later it was decided that it would be named in honor of William A. Shea, the man who brought National League baseball in the country.The construction cost finally amounted to 28.5 million dollars and it was constructed over a period of 29 months. The stadium was inaugurated on 17 April in the year 1964.
