The Prince of Wales Theater is a West End theater located on Coventry Street, near Leicester Square in the City of Westminster. It was inaugurated in January 1884. You should not confuse it with the former Scala Theatre in Charlotte Street that was known as the Prince of Wales Royal Theatre or Prince of Wales's Theatre. The theater is currently owned by Sir Cameron Mackintosh a notable British theatrical producer. At present, the theater has a seating capacity of 1,100 spectators. It was rebuilt in the year 1937 but a lot more renovations were introduced in the year 2004 by Sir Cameron. When it opened first in the year 1884, it was known as the “Prince's Theater.” It was then built for actor manager Edgar Bruce by C.J. Phipps. It was a traditional three-tier theater with a seating capacity of just 1000 people. A lot of theatergoers were attracted to the place as it was favorably located between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square. The first production in the theater was an 1884 revival of W. S. Gilbert's The Palace of Truth starring Herbert Beerbohm Tree. But the first hit production at the venue was the record-breaking comic opera, Dorothy, starring Marie Tempest.
In the year 1892, George Edwardes' musical play, In Town, which is regarded as the first English musical comedy, was performed at this theater. Some other musical comedies that were then played at the theater were the Frank Curzon and Isabel Jay hits Miss Hook of Holland (1907), King of Cadonia (1908) and The Balkan Princess (1910), and later the World War I hits, Broadway Jones (1914), Carminetta (1917) and Yes, Uncle! (1917). Some of the recent productions of the theater include Rent (November 1999 - January 2000), Fosse (8 February 2000 - 6 January 2001), The Witches of Eastwick (23 March 2001 - 27 October 2001), The Full Monty (March 2002 - October 2002), Rent (October 2002 - March 2003), Cliff - The Musical (March 2003 - June 2003) and Mamma Mia! (9 June 2004 - )
