The Prince Edward Theater is a West End theater located on Old Compton Street, just north of Leicester Square, in the City of Westminster. It was inaugurated in the year 1930. A renowned architect, Edward Stone designed the theater, with an interior designed by Marc-Henri Levy and Gaston Laverdet. The theater is presently owned by Delfont Mackintosh, a British theatrical producer. It has a seating capacity for 1,618 spectators. It was named after Prince Edward, the then Prince of Wales. The theater currently hosts Jersey Boys, a documentary-style musical based on the lives of one of the most successful 1960s rock 'n roll groups, the Four Seasons. Prior to this i.e. until 12th January, 2008, it hosted Mary Poppins, a Disney Theatrical musical based on the similarly-titled series of children's books and the hit Disney 1964 film.
The opening event of the theater was a performance of the musical Rio Rita. In the year 1935, the theater was transformed into a dance and cabaret hall and was renamed as "London Casino." In the year 1942, certain stage alterations were done again and it was re-opened as the "Queensberry All Services Club." After the Second World War, the two well-known architects restored the building to theatrical use and it once again acquired the name of “London Casino.” A few years later, the same two architects converted it to a cinema and it was renamed as the "Casino Cinerama Theater." However, in the year 1974, a renowned Ukrainian-born British theatrical impresario took over the charge of the theater. A new screen was then installed at a cost of £150,000. After four years, it was converted back into a theater and was given its present name. The re-opening was marked with the world première of the musical Evita.
