The Orpheum Theater is located at 842 South Broadway in downtown Los Angeles, California. The theater has been named after the Greek God, Orpheus. It was inaugurated on 15th February, 1926. A well-known architect G. Albert Lansburgh designed the structure of the building. The theater has a seating capacity for 2000 spectators. It is currently used for concerts, movie premiers and location shoots. The Orpheum Theater was constructed as the fourth and the final Los Angeles venue for the Orpheum vaudeville circuit. In the year 1989, a lot of renovations were done. A total of $3 million were spent on the renovation. Today it is one of the most restored historical movie palaces in the city. The Orpheum consists of a Beaux Arts facade and a Mighty Wurlitzer organ, which was installed in the year 1928. The Wurlitzer organ is one of the three pipe organs left over in Southern California venues.
As soon as it was opened, many distinguished musicians, jazz singers, comedians performed in this theater. It became a popular venue for the burlesque queen Sally Rand, the Marx Brothers, Will Rogers, Judy Garland, who sung with her family as Francis "Baby" Gumm. Comedian Jack Benny and jazz greats Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington also graced this venue with their superb performances. In 1960s, the theater also hosted many rock and roll concerts which featured Little Richard, Aretha Franklin and Little Stevie Wonder. After the restoration of the theater, Broadcasts of American Idol and filming of The Last Action Hero and Transformers were held here. In the year 2007, it was also used as a arena in Alvin and the Chipmunks movie. The love metal band HIM performed here for their CD/DVD live album Digital Versatile Doom.
