Mellon Arena - Venue Tickets, Schedules, Seating Charts, and Information

The Mellon Arena is an indoor arena at 66 Mario Lemieux Place, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League. The arena was formerly home of the Pittsburgh Rens of the ABL, the Pittsburgh Hornets of the AHL, Pittsburgh Condors of the ABA and the Pittsburgh Pipers. It was opened on September 19, 1961, owned by the City of Pittsburgh. Its designer was Mitchell and Ritchey and the construction costs were $22 million USD. The capacity of the arena is 16,958 for ice hockey, 17,537 for basketball and 18,039 for concerts. The arena hosted the 1990 NHL All-Star game, NHL Stanley Cup Finals games in 1991, 1992 and 2008. Also it hosted the World Wrestling Federation's SummerSlam in 1995. Pittsburgh Penguins signed an $18-million, 10-year agreement in 1999 to rename the Civic Arena the Mellon Arena.

The arena doesn’t produce enough revenue to keep the NHL's Penguins profitable, and also has been unable to attract other events, such as concerts, due to the wiring and electrical capacity of the dated facility. On March 13, 2007 was announced an agreement between the Penguins, the city of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the state of Pennsylvania, for a New Pittsburgh Arena to be constructed for the start of the 2010-2011 NHL season. A lot of events were held at the arena such as the Beatles concert on September 14, 1964, Alice Cooper with his 1971 "Killer" tour on December 27, 1971, Led Zeppelin performed at the venue three times, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page attracted a record attendance of 17,764 at the arena on March 25, 1995 until January 30, 1999 when 18,150 fans packed the arena for a WWF house show. It will host the 2009 Continental Basketball Association All-Star Game and skills competition.
