The Majestic Theater is a Broadway auditorium that is located in midtown Manhattan. It is used as a venue for major musical theater productions and offers a seating capacity for more than 1,600 people. It was also regarded as the second home of the musical “42nd Street” and the third home of the Broadway musical “1776”. The theater has housed “The Phantom of the Opera” since it first opened in the year 1988. It has offered more than 8,000 performances and now it is the longest-running production in the history of Broadway Theater. Earlier a theater with the same name was situated at 5 Columbus Circle, which is the present site of the famous Time Warner Center. The present-day Majestic Theater was designed by the great architect Herbert J. Krapp and constructed by the famous Charnin Brothers as a part of their well-known venture meant for an Entertainment Complex. The project also featured the construction of the John Golden Theater, the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater and the Milford Plaza hotel to make the whole project really big. It was inaugurated on March 28 in the year 1927 with the musical “Rufus LeMaire's Affairs”.
The Shubert brothers later purchased the Majestic Theater during the period of the Great Depression and it is currently owned and operated by the Shubert Organization only. Among the entire premium shows and events that have premiered at the Majestic are “Carousel” in the year 1945, “South Pacific” in the year 1949, “The Music Man” in the year 1957, “Camelot” in the year 1960, “A Little Night Music” in the year 1973 and The Wiz in the year 1975. An amazing theater for all Broadway music lovers!
