The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is a popular performing arts venue that is located on the Potomac River, adjacent to the Watergate Complex in Washington, D.C. It is popularly referred to as the Kennedy Center. It was inaugurated in the year 1971. It is not only the nation's living memorial to President John F. Kennedy but also the "national center for the performing arts," which includes educational initiatives as well. Such outreach programs are funded through ticket sales and gifts from individuals, corporations and private foundations. A very well known architect, Edward Durrell Stone designed the structure and the building contract was given to Philadelphia contractor John McShain. A bureau of the Smithsonian Institution is presently administering it. The federal funds that it receives every year are used for the maintenance and operation of the building. A total of $70 million were spent on the construction of the Kennedy Center.

The Opera House, Concert Hall and the Eisenhower Theater are the three main venues at the Kennedy Center. On the south side lies the concert hall, the Eisenhower is towards the north and the Opera House is situated in the middle of the two. The opera house has a seating capacity for 2,318 spectators. It serves as home to the Washington National Opera and the annual Kennedy Center Honors. It is a large-scale musical venue of the Kennedy Center used for hosting several grand operas and ballets. Japan gifted an outstanding red and gold silk curtain to the house and it has been beautifully put up inside the opera house. The interior of the house also features dashing red velvet. Some other distinctive features of the house also include an Austria-gifted Lobmeyr crystal chandelier.
