The John Labatt Center is an all-purpose sports center situated in London, Ontario, Canada -- the largest such center in Ontario. The Center was inaugurated on 11 October 2002 and is usually referred to as the “JLC” by the local people. It is named after the great legend Sir John Labatt, who was the founder of the famous Labatt Brewery in London. It is the largest Brewery in London and its head office is situated at Toronto. The Center was built to act as the official home to the London Knights, (London’s Ontario Hockey League team) and that is why the very famous and 40-years old London Ice House had to make way for its construction and was replaced from the site. The John Labatt Center is owned by the London Civic Center Corporation, which reflects a perfect example of a public-private alliance.
The Ontario based construction company, EllisDon Corp., builders of the famous Toronto Rogers Center initiated a $42-million project for the construction of the Center. 10 million dollars was invested to purchase the land for the construction purpose. The London Civic Center Corporation is owned by lots of companies, like The City of London, EllisDon and Global Spectrum, the Philadelphia-based company that also helps in managing the Center and also handles around 40 other arenas, stadiums and centers. In addition to hosting hockey games, the Center has played host to many national-level events, such as the “Canadian Figure Skating Championships,” which were held in the year 2005, the Scott Tournament of Hearts in the year 2006, the 2007 World Synchronized Skating Championships, as well as lots of family oriented events including the famous WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment).
