The Izod Center, formerly Continental Airlines Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena in the Meadowlands Sports Complex located on 50 State RT 120, East Rutherford, New Jersey. The arena is the home of the New Jersey Nets NBA basketball team and was also the home of the New Jersey Devils NHL hockey. It was opened on July 2, 1981, owned and operated by New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, designed by Grad Partnership and Dilullo, Clauss, Ostroki & Partners with construction costs of $85 million and with capacity of 20,049 for basketball, 19,040 for ice hockey and 20,000 for concerts.
Upon completion of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, scheduled to open in 2010, the Nets will be leaving the arena. On August 19, 2008, the Izod Center hosted auditions for the eighth season of American Idol. In 1996 the arena hosted the NCAA Men's Final Four, on eleven occasions it hosted the semifinals and finals of the tournament's East Regional and it also hosted the 1982-1989 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and 1986 Atlantic Ten Conference men's basketball tournaments. Also in 1989, 1997 and 2007, the arena hosted WWF SummerSlam as well as the King of the Ring tournament in 2001 and No Mercy 2004.
Iron Maiden played at the arena in 2008 on the Somewhere Back In Time World Tour, and the same year on March 13, Van Halen played there. Hockey players don’t like the poor ice quality of the arena, but on the other hand it is generally well-regarded for concerts, because of its good sightlines and relatively good acoustics.
