Her Majesty's Theater is a West End Theater that is located in the Haymarket, in the City of Westminster. It was inaugurated in the year 1705. An international company, The Really Useful Group since the year 2000, owns the theater. It was originally known as the Queen's Theater and a very well known architect and playwright, Sir John Vanbrugh, designed the building. There were only two theaters in London where serious drama unaccompanied by music was not forbidden. Hence, this theater soon turned into an opera house. From the year 1711 to 1739, more than 25 George Frederick Handel operas were performed here. In the year 1847, the first London performances of Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito, Così fan tutte and Don Giovanni were presented in this theater. In the mid 19th century, it also played host to the Ballet of her Majesty's theater and then again continued to host London premières of several popular operas like Bizet's Carmen and Wagner's Ring Cycle.
Charles J. Phipps was the designer of the present building that was constructed in the year 1897. During the early years of the 20th century, an actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree produced awe-inspiring productions of Shakespeare and other classical works. Numerous premières by major playwrights such as George Bernard Shaw, J. M. Synge, Noel Coward and J. B. Priestley were conducted in this theater. Since the First World War, many renovations have been made in the theater. The theater has now been made suitable for large-scale musical productions. At present the theater specializes in conducting musicals. It served as home to record-setting musical theatre runs, especially the World War I sensation Chu Chin Chow. The name of the theater changed according to the gender of the new monarch. Under the reign of George I, it was known as King's Theater in the year 1714. It was named as His Majesty's Theater from the year 1901 to 1952. When Elizabeth II accessed the throne, it was titled as Her Majesty's Theater.
