The Gershwin Theater is one of the 39 large professional theaters comprising the Broadway Theater. It is located at 222, West 51st Street in midtown-Manhattan in the Paramount Plaza building. The theater has been named in the honor of a popular American composer, George Gershwin. It was earlier also known as the Uris Theater. It was then named after the building developer, Uris Brothers. On 5th June 1983 the Theater got its new name during the Tony Awards ceremony. The theater was inaugurated on 28th November 1972. It is presently owned by the Paramount Group and they have leased it to the Nederlander Organization that is the largest and the most experienced operator of live theater and music in the United States. The seating capacity of the Theater consists of 1,933 seats. In the lobby, there is the famous American Theater Hall of Fame where the audience can gather during the intermission or pre-show.
A very well known set designer, Ralph Alswang has designed the building in an Art Nouveau style. It has been built on the site of the historical Capitol Theater and it is situated on the lower levels of a towering office complex. A total of $12.5 million has been spent on its construction. The opening event was the rock musical Via Galactica starring Raul Julia, a Golden Globe award-winning actor. However it didn't seem to be an auspicious start for the theater, as the venue closed after seven performances. From the year 1974 to 1976, various legendary pop music and jazz performers organized a few concerts. Some of the notable productions of the theater include Seesaw; Gigi in the year 1973, Sweeny Todd in the year 1979, Show Boat in the year 1983. Singin' in the Rain in the year 1985, Meet me in St. Louis in the year 1989 Candide; 1776 in the year 1997, Wicked in the year 2003 and the list doesn't end here.
