The Ellie Caulkins Opera House was inaugurated on 10th September 2005. It is a part of the Denver Performing Arts Complex and is situated in Denver, Colorado. The opera house has a capacity of 2,225 seats. The Municipal Auditorium hosted the Democratic National Convention in the year 1908. It is one of the largest auditoriums in America and was completed in time to host the show. The building was initially built as a multi - purpose structure. It conducted various concerts, theatrical shows, operas, auto shows, conventions, basketball games and even circuses. The main aim of the theater was to host different events. The building later was expanded and could accommodate 3,326 people. The theater had an extremely large back stage area. So huge had the building become that it had a large area, enough to hold rodeos and circuses with a capacity of 12,000 seats.

An event called Music Week was hosted for many years in the theater in the 1920s and 30s. People from different states performed many musical programs. In the year 1921, Denver musicians performed in Flotow's Martha in the month of May and this was broadcasted on radio station 9ZAF. It made history as it was the first time, a full - length opera was broadcast. The auditorium is a very old and popular venue. It has hosted many opera concerts and other local opera productions. To give a modern look, the grand house was renovated in the year 1956. Later, the capacity decreased to 2,240 seats. The Auditorium went under a makeover again in the early 1990s. The Temple Hoyne Buell Theater was added into it. The seating capacity later became 2,065 seats after renovation. Many popular artistes have performed in the auditorium. On 3rd November 2005 Opera Colorado's first season in the new opera house opened. It starred world known mezzo - soprano Denyce Graves. The historic auditorium was rebuilt and later named the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, which honored “Denver's First Lady of Opera.”
