Every year more than 400,000 guests throng to the venue and enjoy Broadway musicals, lectures, ballets, comedies and other phenomenal world-class performances. Edwin J. Thomas Hall was inaugurated in October in the year 1973. It occupies three acres on the western edge of the campus of The University of Akron. The University owns and operates this 13.9 million dollar facility. To honor Edwin J. Thomas, retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and also a member of The University's Board of Trustees, the hall was named E.J. Thomas Hall. Architects Caudill, Dalton, Rowlett and Scott of Houston, Johnson and Partners of Clevel and Van Dijk designed this beautiful hall. It is considered as one of the world's finest multi - purpose halls in terms of design, creative mechanisms and acoustics.
This three-tier hall has a capacity of 2,955 seats. The movable 44-ton ceiling that can close off the Flying Balcony or both the Grand Tier and the Flying Balcony, is one of the interesting features of the hall. Another interesting thing about the hall is that, the hall is a smoke - free building. Smoking areas are situated outside the hall. Other than Broadway shows, the venue hosts other shows throughout the year. The Akron Symphony performs three family concerts and seven classical events every year. Every winter and spring season, the Tuesday Musical Association, gives numerous fabulous performances. At the E.J. Thomas Hall, Children's Concert Society offers 60,000 children to experience live musical performances annually. Come and grab the tickets of your favorite show to be showcased in the hall.
