The Drury Lane Theater Royal is one of the most important and popular theaters of the world. It has the tradition of being the longest continuously running theater in the United Kingdoms. Benjamin Wyatt designed this very old theater. It was opened on 10th October, in the year 1812. The theater has a seating capacity of 2,237 spectators situated on 4 levels.

Many theaters have been built and demolished time and again at this site. The first was built in the year 1663 and was later destroyed by a fire in the year 1672. The next time a theater was built, was in the year 1674 and it lasted till the year 1791. The third theater was constructed in the year 1794 but was again destroyed in the year 1804 due to a fire. Finally the current building was set up in the year 1812 for the people of the area. In the year 1922, the building was renovated to give it a new look. This huge auditorium has a 24-meter deep stage and also has an extensive back stage area.

The theater has generally presented “legit” theater work. But in the year 1915, two films were show cased for the audiences that were D W Griffiths' The Birth of a Nation and Intolerance. Many musicals have also been conducted here in the old theater. “Rose Marie” was played for two years. Other successful shows were Noel Coward's “Cavalcade,” which featured a cast of 300 stars and more than 100 extras. The theater was associated with Ivor Novello’s works like “Careless Rapture,” “Glamorous Nights,” “The Dancing Years” and “Crest of the wave.” Various musicals played in the theater were “Not in Front of the Audience,” “2nd Street,” “Miss Saigon,” “My Fair Lady,” “Anything Goes,” “Lord of the Rings” and others. The theater continues to play other wonderful musicals also. Some in the offing are “French and Saunders” to be played from October 15 to November 8th 2008 and later on 12th December 2008, “Oliver” will be staged.
