Citi Field is the soon-to-be home of the MLB’s New York Mets being built in Willets Point, which is located in the borough of Queens in New York and will replace Shea Stadium. The team will play their first game there on April 3, 2009 against the Boston Red Sox. The first regular season game will be on April 14 against the San Diego Padres. The original plans for the site were created as part New York City’s bid for the 2012 Olympics. This new stadium will have 45,000 seats and the outside and entranceway will be evocative of Ebbets Field. It will have an interior design with features of more recent ballparks. It will be accessible by the Long Island Railroad and the NYC Subway 7 train. This will be the team’s third stadium in their 50-year history. This stadium was chosen to host the 2013 All-Star Game.
Willets Point, also known as the Iron Triangle, is the name given to the Queens neighborhood of Corona. There are no sidewalks or sewers and only one resident, as of 2007. It is bordered by Northern Blvd to the north, 126th Street and Shea Stadium to the west, Roosevelt Ave to the south and the Flushing River to the east. This area is industrial and filled with auto repair shops, scrap yards, waste processing sites and other small businesses of a similar nature. Queens is the biggest area and the second largest of New York City’s five boroughs. It’s found on the western portion of Long Island and is home to 2 of the New York City area’s 3 major airports. Queens was founded in 1683 and was one of New York’s original 12 counties. Allegedly, it was named after the then-queen consort of Charles II. It is frequently thought to be one of the more suburban New York City boroughs. As of the 2000 census, there were 2, 229, 379 people in Queens.
