Busch Stadium, also called “New Busch Stadium” and “Busch Stadium III,” is th open-air home to the St. Louis Cardinals of the MLB’s National League. It replaced Busch Memorial Stadium and is in a portion of that stadium’s former footprint. The ballpark opened on April 4, 2006; there was an exhibition game between the minor league Memphis Redbirds and Springfield Cardinals.
The first major league game happened on April 10 against the Milwaukee Brewers. It’s the third stadium the Cardinals have played in named Busch Stadium. The first was Sportsman’s Park, which was renamed to Busch Stadium in 1953 after then team owner Gussie Busch. In 1966, the first stadium closed and the team moved to a multi-purpose stadium, Busch Memorial Stadium. When it opened, it was able to seat 37,962 fans with room for 2,751 standing fans. By the end of the first season, the seating capacity went up to 46, 861.
St. Louis is a city in Missouri and is bordered by the Mississippi River on the east and St. Louis County on the north, south and west. It’s the biggest metropolitan area in the state and was named for King Louis IX of France. The city is famous for its French and German influences, as well as a Victorian past. The population is proud of the fact that the city hosted the 1904 World’s Fair and the 1904 Olympic Games, which was the first to ever be held in the US
The city has quite a few nicknames, the most popular is “Gateway City,” because it’s seen as the eastern and western US divider. As of July 2006, the population of St. Louis was 353,837. Currently, the stadium’s seating capacity is 50,345. A commercial area called Ballpark Village is being built next to the stadium over the old stadium’s footprint. This will include commercial and residential space and the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame.
On October 7 and 8, 2006, the stadium hosted its first ever playoffs. The Cardinals won the series 3 games to one and went on to the championships. One week later, they beat the New York Mets in the first NL Championship Series game; and they went on to win the series and go to the World Series. On October 24, 26 and 27, the stadium hosted the first World Series games against the Detroit Tigers. The Cardinals won all 3 games and got their 10th world championship. They are the 3rd team to win the World Series in the stadium’s inaugural year.
In 2006, every game was sold out, which gave a total attendance of 3,407,104 for that season; this is the second largest in the team’s history. In 2008, the team started the Champions Club in the stadium. On June 7, 2008, the stadium had its first concert ever; the Black Crowes opened for Dave Matthews Band. MLB chose the stadium as the host for the 2009 MLB All-Star Game.
