The Brooks Atkinson Theatre was built in the year 1926 and was originally named as Mansfield Theater. Herbert J. Krapp handled the craft and design of the theater. After the year 1933, the theater was misused for a number of wrong reasons but Michael Myerberg bought it in the year 1945 and leased it to CBS for the sole motive of television productions only. The name of the theater was changed in order to give honor to a well-known drama critic of New York Times, Brooks Atkinson, in the year 1960. Now it has taken the form of a Broadway theater and has returned to its original legitimate use. The theater is very famous with people who have witnessed or want to witness lots of distinguished dramas and comedies starring amazing personalities like Matthew Broderick, Glenn Close, Richard Dreyfuss, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Derek Jacobi, Nathan Lane, Gary Sinise, Kevin Spacey, Jerry Stiller, and Marisa Tomei.
The theater went through a reconditioning procedure in the year 2000 and now the original chandelier that had been removed some 40 years ago once again brightens it. Currently the theater has a seating capacity of 1,069 spectators, which is big enough to hold the crazy theater enthusiasts. It is one of The Nederlander Organization’s nine Broadway theaters. The most popular amongst all the plays is “The Revival of Grease” that was played in the year 2007. It featured Max Crumm as Danny Zuko and Laura Osnes as Sandy Dumbrowski. Other extremely popular and recent productions include The Look of Love; Medea; Noises Off; Jane Eyre; Uncle Vanya; The Rainmaker; The Iceman Cometh; Fool Moon; Wait Until Dark; Taking Sides; Buried Child; On the Waterfront; What’s Wrong with This Picture? It offers a perfect delight for the lovers of art!
