The Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex is a sports, convention and entertainment complex located in Birmingham, Alabama with capacity of 17,654 seats for sporting events and up to 19,000 for concerts. The BJCC Board of Directors approved plans for the addition of a $55-million large entertainment district to be developed by Performa Entertainment. The designer of the arena was Geddes Brecher Qualls Cunningham, who is the winner of the largest open architectural competition ever organized by the American Institute of Architects, and the facility was built between 1974 and 1976 for approximately $104 million USD.
There are plans for a major expansion of the BJCC to increase and upgrade the exhibition facilities and construct a new covered multi-use convention facility. From 1976 to 1979 the arena was the home of the Birmingham Bulls of the WHA, also it was home of the basketball program of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and today is home to the Alabama Steeldogs arena football team.
Also it is the site of major concert tours and other events, including trade shows, and it contains several luxury suites and a press box. The arena has hosted four Southeastern Conference men's basketball tournaments between 1979 and 1992, five Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournaments and the 1999 Conference USA men's basketball tournament. Before moving to UAB's newly constructed Alys Stephens Center, the 3,000-seat Concert Hall was the home of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
