Assembly Hall is a very big arena that is geared up with a seating capacity for 17,456 patrons and is situated on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. It was inaugurated in the year 1971 after replacing the very famous Gladstein Fieldhouse. The main court of the arena is built after the men's basketball coach, Branch McCracken, who was responsible for leading the school to its first two NCAA National Championships that were held in the years 1940 and 1953
The arena was equipped with a newly installed state-of-the-art playing surface in the year 1995. The floor is furnished with the latest court science that is tapped with facilities like “shock absorbers” as well as a permanent playing area. This permanent floor covers the entire floor area. New bleacher seats were added along with a well-furnished media row and end seating platforms to change the entire look of the venue.
Sportscaster Dick Vitale was of the view that the Assembly Hall should be given an entirely new name in the honor of former coach Bobby Knight. His statement was recorded in a column for ESPN in the year 2003. This was unlikely to be achieved because of the controversial nature of Knight as the University fired him in the year 2000. The construction of a state-of-the-art, $1.9 million scoreboard-video board was completed in the year 2005. The venue has even played host to the NCAA basketball tournament three times, along with playing host to sub-regional games in the years 1977 and 1979 respectively and the Midwest regional finals in the year 1981.
