Built in November, 1965, the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum is a versatile indoor sports center, capable of providing accommodation for more than 14,500 fans for basketball games and 13,730 for ice sports. After the owner and operator of this facility, The Arizona State Fair approved the design plans of the architects Leslie Mahoney and Lew Place, the arena was built for approximately $7 million, and the approach of these architects took when designing the plans, and what was created as the end result was considered an innovative and futuristic thinking at the time.
Even though today the arena is not a home to a sports team, throughout the years it has hosted the home games of teams from the WHA, MISL, ABA and the WCHL, and perhaps one of the most famous names that played there is the team of the Phoenix Suns of the NBA, from 1968 to 1992. Other then the sports teams, the facility has hosted the NBA All Star Game in 1975 and WrestleWar, organized by WCW in 1991, the VNSA book fair, which is the largest book fair in the West and takes place every February.
In 2008 Barrack Obama organized a gathering there, where other prestigious political figures were present as well, and in 2005 the arena was used as a refugee camp for more than 2,000 people whose properties were destroyed from the hurricane Katrina.
