Opened on November 11, 1988 the A.J. Palumbo Center is versatile indoor sports arena, owned and operated by Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Today, the facility provides the grounds for the home games of the University’s sports teams, with basketball and volleyball perhaps being some of the more popular ones. Inside, the arena is built to provide flexibility in terms of interior arrangement, depending on the type of the event hosted. With a decent accommodation capacity for university terms of 5,358, besides the basketball games, the center can also host boxing games and theater plays. In 2006, the University approved funds for renewal of the facility, after establishing that the current interior and exterior structure and outlay is quickly becoming obsolete and is not keeping up with the times.
This resulted in thorough, large scale changes that improved the sports terrains, sitting arrangements and the administration facilities inside. Before the arena was built, which was in 1988, the sports teams from the University had to manage and organize home games in other sports center, like the Civic Arena or the Fitzerald Field House, both of which are near the city of Pittsburgh. The first home match in their own arena took place on the 3rd of December, 1988.
