Opened in 1980, the 9:30 Club today is an entertainment venue hosting concerts featuring rock and punk music, parties and other various nightlife related events in Washington. The club can provide accommodation for 1,200 people and the interior can be rearranged for standing or seating depending on the type of the event hosted. With good management by the previous owners, in the early ‘80s the club became well established as the center for alternative music, which soon made it a very attractive location for great music names to visit and organize concerts there.
Famous names hosted include Blue Angel, X, The Bangles and Chuck Brown. To meet the modern day expectations of an entertainment venue of this size and popularity, renovation plans were implemented in the beginning of 1996 and the club changed its name from the Atlantis Club to 9:30 Club. After this the club became even more popular and hosted some of the biggest names in history with Bob Dylan appearing twice in 1997, the Beastie Boys in 2004 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers did a reunited concert warm up in 1997. The year after a Radiohead concert was hosted there and in 2005 Bob Mould performed and recorded his appearance on a DVD. In addition to these events, the 9:30 Club has won awards for club of the year on several occasions and has been holding the ticket sales record in the past several years.
