The city of Vancouver lies in the province of British Columbia, United States. Vancouver is the largest city in the province and is also one of the major seaports of Canada. According to the 2006 census, the population of the city stands at 611,869. Vancouver is a part of the Vancouver Metropolitan Area, which is the largest metropolitan area in the country and the third largest one in the world. Vancouver often features in the lists of world's most livable cities.

The city was named after the British explorer, Captain George Vancouver. Vanc is surrounded by the Strait of Georgia, the Burrard Inlet, the Fraser River, the Coast Mountains and the city of Burnaby. The economy of the city thrives particularly on the resource industries, such as forestry, mining, fishing and agricultural. Vancouver is popularly referred to as the Hollywood North, since it is the third largest film production center in entire North America after the cities of Los Angeles and New York.

Vancouver has a rich cultural tradition and is the home of many prominent theater companies, such as the Arts Club Theatre Company on Granville Island, the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company, the Touchstone Theatre, Studio 58, the Carousel Theatre and the United Players of Vancouver. Over the years, many notable performances have taken place in venues, such as the 'GM Place', 'Queen Elizabeth Theatre', 'BC Place Stadium' or the 'Pacific Coliseum'. The city hosts a number of famous festivals, such as the 'Vancouver Folk Music Festival', the 'Vancouver International Jazz Festival', the annual Fringe Festival and the 'Vancouver International Film Festival'. The city also has a thriving rock music culture and has given many reputed rock acts, such as the hardcore band 'D.O.A', the 'Subhumans', the 'Young Canadians', the 'Pointed Sticks', 'Active Dog' and 'The Modernettes'.

A number of accomplished sports clubs are from this city, such as the hockey teams 'Vancouver Canucks' and 'Vancouver Giants', the football team 'British Columbia Lions', the baseball team 'Vancouver Canadians' and the soccer team 'Vancouver Whitecaps FC'. The city will also host the '2010 Winter Olympics'.
