The band that would go on to sell over 80 million albums worldwide had its beginnings in the Van Halen household. Brothers Eddie and Alex took music lessons and they were jamming by the 1960s. Initially, Eddie played drums and Alex played guitar, but they traded instruments and continue to play them to this day. Naturally they decided to start a band. First they added Mark Stone on bass and allowed David Lee Roth to join the group instead of renting sound equipment from him. They were "Mammoth" but soon replaced Stone with Michael Anthony. Mammoth became Genesis, which eventually became Van Halen.

As Van Halen, they played backyard parties and clubs. They landed a monumental gig at a down and out club by the name of Gazzarri's. This performance led to local notoriety and a residential gig at the Whiskey a Go Go. From 1978 to 1984, the group released six albums. Van Halen, the debut album, continued to sell long passed its initial release. In fact the album has since gone diamond. The follow up album, Van Halen II would go quintuple-platinum and the group's third album, Women and Children First, went triple-platinum. Fair Warning went double platinum, Diver down went quadruple-platinum, and 1984 would join the debut album as a diamond release.

The end of the first David Lee Roth era featured hit songs like "Pretty Woman", "Jump", "I'll Wait", and "Panama". These songs proved to be enduring classics that remain on the radio rotation. Van Halen would have to find a new lead singer after David Lee Roth left to pursue a solo career. They found his replacement in Sammy Hagar. The lead singer remained with the group from 1985 until 1996. Hagar recorded four albums with the group Each went multi-platinum and reached number one on the Billboard 200. 5150, OU812, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, and Balance continued to maintain its standing as a top rock act.

Hagar had his own catalog of hits to brag about - "Why Can't This Be Love", "When It's Love", and "Runaway". His departure came with its own controversy. Van Halen had been working with David Lee Roth and fired Hagar after he refused to cooperate with the band's direction. Gary Cherone stepped in as lead singer from 1996 to 1999, but attendance problems led to his departure. A hiatus followed until 2003.
