Ute Lemper was born in the city of Münster, in Germany in the year 1963, on July 4. From a very young age she was interested in piano. So when she was nine years old, she started her piano and dance lessons. Since she was so talented, she started receiving invitations to play at shows. At the age of 16, she joined the band the Panama Drive Band, the punk music group. Her first show was at the Max Reinhardt Seminary in Vienna and from there, their was no looking back. She carried out her studies in music in Salzburg, Cologne and Berlin.

In 1983, she was asked to starred in the Viennese production of Max Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats. After two years, in the musical comedy Peter Pan, she essayed the title role. After this there was no stopping her. In 1986, she starred in a European revival of Cabaret, where she portrayed Sally Bowles so beautifully that she was awarded the Molière award for her performance at Paris' Théâtre Mogador. She then went on to play in an international tour that was paying homage to the life and repertoire of Kurt Weil and after finishing her work, she again turned to films. She appeared in Peter Greenaway's Prospero's Books and Robert Altman's Ready to Wear. In 1998, she starred in the West End production of Chicago; The Punishing Kiss followed in the spring of 2000.

She is also credited for playing the role of Lola in the Marlene Dietrich's The Blue Angel, the original European Sally Bowles in a Paris production of Cabaret, and the original London revival Velma Kelly in Chicago. When Disney was broadcasting its most famous animated show The Little Mermaid in Germany, she was asked to lend her voice for the character Ariel for German audiences. Not only this, Lemper has also been the Crossover Artist of the Year for the year 1993/1994 in Billboard. She is one of the most prolific and talented artist in recording. Besides she has also appeared on number of cast recordings as well as compilation concerts. She has also been a part of Roger Waters' The Wall concert in 1990. Apart of concerts and recordings with other artists, she has also done some solo recordings too.

Her singles and albums are so popular that it seems to spread out everywhere, some of this are well reviewed interpretations of Kurt Weil's compositions, such as his songs from the late 80's, the German cabaret songs and some of his political songs, that were sung in underground locations in 1930s Berlin and elsewhere. Her disc of Illusions is devoted to the songs of Marlene Dietrich and Édith Piaf in the year 1992. For this disc she received rave reviews. She has also done many pop albums in different languages such as English, French and German. Her most acclaimed pop album was Punishing Kiss, that was released in the year 2000. The songs of Punishing Kiss were written especially for her by Scott Walker, Elvis Costello, Philip Glass, and Neil Hannon. The latter also performed with her on two of the disc's tracks.

She is also well-known for her wild interpretations on discs like the Sondheim tribute City of Strangers, that particularly contains version of the Elaine Stritch-popularized song The Ladies Who Lunch. Lemper released her compilation All That Jazz: The Best of Ute Lemper, in the year 1998. But One Day..., that appeared in late 2002 was the first album to feature Lemper's own compositions since 1997's Nuits Étranges. Blood and Feathers is her first album that she performed live at Live at the Cafe Carlyle which was released in mid 2005. While she continued in her endeavor from 2003 till 2006, Lemper's songwriting talents only got better, that can be clearly seen in her discs that she has released from time time in all those years, as she moved from an interpretive singer to an accomplished songwriter.
