UFC
The Ultimate Fighting Championship is a global promotional company marketing fights between the very best mixed martial arts fighters. Initially, the organization sought to pit the best fighters from different disciplines in an eight-sided ring with few rules. This was meant to determine who the best fighter was and what the best fighting style in the world was. This was the goal when the UFC held its first event in 1993 in Denver. As the promotional company continued to organize these fights a new kind of fighting developed altogether.
The best fighters in the world would not remain bound by the fighting styles, instead these competitors used moves from other disciplines and a loosely defined style known as mixed martial arts became the dominant style. In the 21st century fighters from all weight classes learn these fundamentals of wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, and several others and adjust for each fight.
Just as the fighters have made changes to their fighting styles to emerge victorious from the octagon, the UFC has made changes to survive as a sports entertainment league and become the most popular fighting organization in the world. Most notably, it has added weight classes. The UFC had been an exhibition with one title at the beginning. That was when it was about comparing fighting styles. As these fighters began to draw from the same pool of moves and strategies, weight began to matter more and more.
Also, political pressure to develop weight classes built as states actually started banning Ultimate Fighting Championship matches. Those states object to the difference in weight and the relatively few rules, considering these matches to be too savage.
Now the UFC is a sports empire with many different weight classes and seven different brands. The most popular of the brands are the numbered UFC events, which are pay-per-view events. These feature the biggest matches, specifically the title fights. There are plenty of UFC fights available for those who do not want to pay for individual events too. UFC has standard fighting formats on Versus, Fox, FX, and Fuel TV. These shows will occasionally have championship fights, but most often they are matches between contenders trying to position themselves for a shot at a title. These many formats provide plenty of opportunity for UFC fans to enjoy a great match.
