Initially, Russell did not get into a musical career, instead after graduating from University of California with a degree in criminology, he taught school in Nigeria at the time of the Biafran War. He actually started his musical career by performing at strip bars in the early 1970s in Vancouver. Eventually, he shifted to Texas and started a band with singer-pianist Patricia Hardin. The duo released two albums after which they split. At this point of time Russell quit the music industry. He began working as a taxi driver in Queens and eventually met guitarist Andrew Hardin. Hardin was mighty impressed with Russell's songs and urged him to form a band. As luck would have it, Robert Hunter of the ‘Grateful Dead' got into Russell's cab. Russell impressed him with his song ‘Gallo Del Cielo'. Eventually, Hunter asked Russell and Hardin to first perform on stage with him at New York's Bitter End, and then to become his regular opening act.

In the 1980s Russell released four albums attributed to the Tom Russell Band, which had Hardin and accordion maestro Fats Kaplin. These albums combined basics of folk, country and rock, and frequently had songs inspired by the American Southwest, blue collar American life, and by events from Russell's colorful life. In the 1990s Russell released quite a few numbers of solo albums. He joined forces with blues singer Barrence Whitfield on two albums, and also recorded an acoustic album amalgamating new material with his favorite cowboy themed songs. His 1999 album ‘The Man From God Knows Where' became quite a big hit. The album had guest singers like Iris DeMent, Dolores Keane and Dave Van Ronk. In 2005 Russell came out with the album ‘Hotwalker', the second in a series of a planned "Americana trilogy. The first in the series was his popular album ‘The Man From God Knows Where'. In 2006, Russell released the album ‘Love and Fear', which is a compilation of original songs that were motivated by the highs and lows of his relationships with women.
