Tom Petty
Tom Petty done everything in his careers, whether it be straight rock, new wave, heartland raock, punk rock, or southern rock. Tom Petty is one of the most venerable artists of his generation and the 57 year old is still playing.
Tom Petty's life changed when he was 11 and met Elvis Presley. Petty met Elvis in 1961 when he was working on his movie "Follow That Dream". Soon after Petty saw The Beatles on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and he decided his fate was to be in a band.
Tom Petty went through his share of early band, The Sundowners, The Epics, and Mudcrutch, but he truly began his career as a musician with the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their debut album in 1976. The album did not receive much fan fare in the States but made a dent in Britain. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers second album, "You're Gonna Get It!" broke into the top 40 and featured the band's first hit singles with "I Need to Know" and "Listen to Her Heart."
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers went platinum with the next album, "Damn the Torpedoes," and its hit singles "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Refuge". The band went on to produce five more albums before breaking up in 1987. "Hard Promises" and Southern Accents went platinum.
After Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers broke up, Tom Petty formed an All Star band called The Traveling Wilburys. The Traveling Wilburys consisted of Petty, Bob Dylon, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne. The death of Orbison signaled the end for Tom Petty's time with the Traveling Wilburys and Petty followed with his incredibly popular solo album, "Full Moon Fever."
The album featured the classic songs "I Won't Be Back", "Free Fallin'", and "Runnin' Down a Dream". Although the album was supposed to be Tom Petty's solo album, he included a number of friends from the Heartbreakers and the Traveling Wilburys in its production. Soon after he reunited with the Heart Breakers and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers became a force in the ‘90s.
"Into the Great Wide Open", "Greatest Hits", "Wildflowers", and "Playback" were incredible successes. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Greatest Hits" went diamond and the others went platinum.
Tom Petty's career has been long and eventful, performing with some of the greatest musicians of the last 50 years and being nominated for 18 Grammy Awards in the process.
