Three Dog Night Tickets for Sale

Three Dog Night scored a succession of 21 hit singles, including eleven Top Tens, and twelve consecutive gold albums from 1969 to 1975, thanks to the slick, sometimes soulful vocal harmonies of singers Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells and an excellent ear for quality material. While often criticized as commercial, the band was noted for its creative arrangements and interpretations, and their cover choices gave exposure (and royalties) to several talented songwriters: Nilsson ("One"), Laura Nyro ("Eli's Coming"), Randy Newman ("Mama Told Me (Not to Come)"), Hoyt Axton ("Joy to the World"), Argent's Russ Ballard ("Liar"), and Leo Sayer ("The Show Must Go On"). Wells and Hutton met in the '60s while the former was the lead singer of the Enemies and the latter, a former cartoon voice who had recorded several flop singles, served as producer. In 1967, Hutton conceived the idea of a three-vocalist group, and he and Wells enlisted mutual friend Negron. They took their name from an Australian expression describing low nocturnal temperatures in the outback (the colder the night, the more dogs needed to keep warm while sleeping). The three cut a few unsuccessful singles and decided to expand their range by hiring backing musicians, who included guitarist Mike Allsup, keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon, bassist Joe Schermie, and drummer Floyd Sneed.

Three Dog Night was an American rock and roll band active from 1968 to 1975. Their hits included; "Joy to the World", "Easy To Be Hard" from the musical Hair, and "Black and White". The band included three lead vocalists — Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells — and Michael Alsup on guitar, Floyd Sneed on drums, Joe Schermie (from the Cory Wells Blues Band) on bass, and Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards.

The band was the prodigy of Beach Boys producer, composer, vocalist, and instrumentalist Brian Wilson, and at the time went under the name Redwood. The band changed their name based on an article describing how Australian Aborigines slept with their dogs for warmth on cold nights, the coldest being a "three-dog night."

Three Dog Night collected no less than fourteen gold albums and recorded twenty-one Billboard Top 40 hits, nine of which went gold. Dunhill, their record company, claimed 40 million units sold by them. Their use of songs by Randy Newman ("Mama Told Me Not To Come", their sole British hit), Laura Nyro ("Eli's Coming"), Hoyt Axton ("Joy to the World"), Elton John & Bernie Taupin ("Lady Samantha"), and Harry Nilsson ("One") were the first major hits for songs by these singer/songwriters.

Joe Schermie quit in 1973 and was replaced by Jack Ryland. The band then became an eight-piece with the induction of another keyboards player, Skip Konte. However, by this time, the band had stopped recording and broke up not long afterwards. Although each band member needed to 'get away' from the hectic world of pop music, each began, eventually to feel the need to return. From unfinished business involving the original group got them together again. To their surprise, they found they all shared the same feeling, a resurgence of interest in music and a growing desire to try it all over again. As Danny Hutton puts it, "We just had a test rehearsal and discovered the old magic was still their." Three Dog Night was reborn.
