"A fantasy. A musical. A place where dreams come true." has been the tagline for this mystical, musical movie. It is now being converted into a $5 million Broadway musical adaptation of the film. It will be premiered at the Helen Hayes Theatre in Manhattan on 23rd May, 2007. The musical's star cast is Kerry Butler as Kira, James Carpinello as Sonny and Tony Roberts (actor) as Danny. In a new plot twist to the Broadway version as the "evil" Muse sisters, it will be enacted by Jackie Hoffman and Mary Testa.
The show centers on "Kira, a Greek muse sent to Earth to inspire mortals and artists in Venice, CA, in the 1980's. While on earth, Kira falls in love with an artist when helping him realize his dreams." This parody of the 1980 Olivia Newton-John movie-musical, is about Kira, a Greek muse descending from the heavens who is sent to Earth to inspire mortals. The musical is written by Douglas Carter Beane, and it is being directed by Christopher Ashley.
The music is the same as the film version and the score, written by John Farrar and Jeff Lynne, which includes his 5 songs from the film, including the Billboard Top 20 hits: "Xanadu," "Party All Over the World," and "I'm Alive". Farrar's hits include most of Olivia Newton-John's top songs including 5 from the film, most notably "Magic", which was #1 on Billboard and "Suddenly", another Top 20 hit.

Sonny Malone is a gifted artist who's ambition is to become famous, by painting larger versions of album covers for record-store window advertisements. As the story opens, Sonny is bust and on the brink of giving up his dream. He restarts painting record covers, after some humorous run-ins with his dominating boss and nemesis Simpson.
To inspire the men to accomplish, the Greek muses incarnate themselves on Earth. One of them, incarnated as a girl named Kira, meets an artist named Sonny Malone. The story progesses as the mysterious Kira comes along to help and invigorate a young artist, Sonny Malone. She helps him converge with the rich Danny McGuire, and the two link up together to create an aesthetic and business success, an unusual club called "Xanadu."
Kira is one of nine mysterious and beautiful women, little-known to Sonny, who literally came to life from a local mural near the beach in town. She falls in love with Sonny, and this creares a problem because, in reality, she is Terpsichore, the Muse of dance. The other women are her sisters and goddesses, and the mural is in reality a entrance and their point of entry to Earth. The Muses often to help inspire others to follow their dreams and desires by descending on earth. But in Kira's case, she had broken the rules, and ended up falling in love with him as well. Her parents (presumably the Greek gods Zeus and Mnemosyne) remind her to the timeless sphere of the gods. A discussion between Sonny and Zeus happens with Mnemosyne, on behalf of Kira and Sonny. Kira interferes by expressing, that the emotions she has experienced toward Sonny are new to her and asks if she could only have one more night together with Sonny, so his dream of Xanadu becoming a success can come true. But Zeus finally sends Sonny back to Earth. Kira and the Muses perform for a packed house for Xanadu's grand opening and they return to the realm of the gods in outstanding fashion.
Xanadu's theme has a diverse range of styles, from the munificent costumes being worn by the cabaret dancers to the sleek, feminine costumes of the Greek muses. A sequence which symbolises Sonny's unflagging pursuit of his unachievable love, towards the spiritual Kira is prominent. He follows the chase, while Kira transmutes herself into birds and fish to elude him until finally, she falls in love with him. The special effects and mystical aura created are the microcosm of the theme of the broadway musical - a magical sequence.
