The Trinity Irish Dance Company has been striving for and achieving that which is significant, but which is equally difficult to achieve the transition from craft to art and there is a proper synthesis of the forms to bring out something that is both forward-looking and new. The company is always trying their level best to maintain integrity while at the same time going beyond the framework of ethnicity to carve out new traditions.
The Trinity Academy has grown, when 20 years ago there were a dozen students who used to practice in a church basement, while now, there are almost a huge group of young dancers and is now one of the largest Irish dance program in the world. The Company, aims to provide a creative outlet along with professional livelihood for the young dancers at the peak of their abilities. The company has toured internationally and have been invited guests for dignitaries as varied as the royal family in Monaco, Ireland's President Mary Robinson, and Indian meditation master Gurumayi Chidvilasananda.
Mark Howard was born in Yorkshire in England but later his parents shifted to Chicago and so he grew up there. Since he was very much interested in dancing, so his parents got him admitted to the Dennehy School of Irish Dance, just at the age of nine. He has also been a North American champion Irish dancer also. When he was just 17 years old, he started the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance, where with only dozen young dancers they used to carry out their practicing at the church basement. After 8 years, his Academy won 18 World Championship titles for the United States. In his own ways, Mark Howard has been using Irish dance as both instrument and metaphor, that is crossing all cultural boundaries. He has also been awarded the Emmy Award for his choreography. He formed the Trinity Irish Dance Company at the age of 29. Right now he is not the only choreographer, but has got a host of talented and famous choreographers, musicians, costume designers and also video designer. For his innovative work, he has been named one of Irish American Magazine's 'Top 100 Irish-Americans'. In 1991, his PBS production of 'Green Fire and Ice' aired nationally, and in 2002, PBS began airing 'One Step Beyond.' His early work on common rhythm and movement between African and Celtic dance was an integral part of the 1993 Emmy Award-winning PBS special 'World Stage'. In 1995 his choreography was presented in the ABC special 'About Us: The Dignity of Children', hosted by Oprah Winfrey. He has also done work for Disney, Touchstone, Universal, and Dream Works. Ron Howard (Backdraft) and Sam Mendes (American Beauty) are the directors with whom he has worked. Lara Flynn Boyle (The Practice) and Kate Hudson (Almost Famous) are some of the celebrities who have been his students.
