Background- The story "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice" has been written by E.T.A. Hoffman. Although some changes have occurred on stage, but the basic plot remains. It is the story of a young German Girl, Clara Stahlbaum who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King. It was the idea of Marius Petipa to choreograph the story into a ballet and is based on a revision by Alexander Dumas, a well known French author. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the ballet in the year 1891 or 1892 and the first performance was carried out at the Mariinsky Theater in St Petersburg, Russia., although it was not that successful. It was in the year 1944, when William Christensen, a former Ballet master of the San Francisco Ballet imported the work to the United States and it was a great success.
The story starts with Christmas Eve where celebrations are going on full swing at the Stahlbaum house, where they are celebrating their annual Christmas party. The house is full of friends and family. Their children Clara and Fritz are also enjoying the party with their friend, dancing and playing. With music and dance, the party grows more festive and at that moment godfather Drosselmeyer, also arrives in the party. The children gathers around him as he always full of surprises. He is a very skillful toy and clock maker. This time he amazes the children when he pulls out two life-size dolls. Withing few minutes the party resumes again with everyone wanting to dance with the dolls. Drosselmeyer gives away presents to the children, though everyone found the present to their liking, but the hit of the show was Clara's gift, a beautiful Nutcracker which becomes the hit of the party. This make Fritz jealous and breaks it. Clara starts crying, moved by the tears Drosselmeyer repairs the Nutcracker and smile returns to Clara's lips.
As night draws in, the guests starts leaving the party and the Stahlbaum goes to the bed. But in the dead of the night, Clara gets worried about her Nutcracker and falls asleep with him.

In the midnight, strange things starts happening. All the toys around her comes to life and the room fills up with the army of mice, who are lead by a cruel and fierce Mouse King. The Nutcracker also comes to life and he leads his army of toy soldiers to fight against the army of mice. A fierce battle takes place between themselves, in which the Mouse King gained an upper hand over the Nutcracker. Finally, the nutcracker and his army are captured by the Mouse King. Clara in her last attempt to save the Nutcracker, throws her slipper at the Mouse king, which instantly kills the King. The mice gets scared and runs off with the dead body of the Mouse King.
After that the Nutcracker turns into a Prince and takes away Clara to his own land, the Land of Snow. Clara is enchanted by the wonderful forest where she is welcomed by the dancing snowflakes.
Then the Nutcracker takes Clara to the Land of Sweets. Their Clara is greeted by Sugar Plum Fairy. The fairy comes to know, through the Nutcracker, about their fight with the army of mice. She is thrilled with the news and she rewards them with a celebration and dances. The dances were The Spanish Dance, The Arabian Dance, The Russian Dance, The Chinese Dance, The Mirliton Dance, The Waltz of Flowers
Finally Clara's dream comes to an end and she wakes up to find her beloved Nutcracker beside her near the Christmas tree.
