'The Light in the Piazza' is a musical drama by Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas. The play was originally developed at the Intiman Playhouse in Seattle and the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. It made its Broadway debut on April 18, 2005. The Broadway production is produced by Lincoln Center Theater in their Vivian Beaumont Theater. The Light in the Piazza is based on Elizabeth Spencer's 1960 novel of the same name.
This musical is set in Florence and Rome in the summer of 1953. The story revolves around a mother and daughter, Margret and Clara Johnson who are traveling through Italy. The daughter falls in live with a handsome, high-spirited Florentine, Fabrizio Naccarelli. As their relationship becomes stronger, Margret Johnson must reveal a hidden truth that will surely test both the lovers.
The musical is directed by Bartlett Sher. The highly accomplished cast includes Victoria Clark as Margaret Johnson, Kelli O'Hara as Clara Johnson, Matthew Morrison as Fabrizio Naccarelli, Michael Berresse as Giuseppe Naccarelli, Sarah Uriarte Berry as Franca Naccarelli, Patti Cohenour as Signora Naccarelli, Beau Gravitte as Roy Johnson and Mark Harelik as Signor Naccarelli.
