The Importance of Being Earnest is a classic comedy penned by the literary genius Oscar Wilde. The play was first performed for the public on February 14, 1895 at the St. James' Theater in London. The play is regarded by many critics and scholars as being the wittiest play in the English language.
The play is set in England during the Victorian era, Oscar Wilde's brilliant play makes fun of the English upper class with light-hearted satire and dazzling humor. The main characters of the play are John Worthing, Algernon Moncrieff, Lady Bracknell, Cecily Cardew, Gwendolen Fairfax, Miss Prism and Dr. Chasuble. The play focuses on Jack and Algernon, two young men in love with girls both determined to marry someone named Earnest.
Show Biography - The Importance Of Being Earnest
The plot of the play goes something like this. Algernon, a wealthy young Londoner, pretends to have a friend named Bunbury who lives in the country and frequently falls ill. Whenever Algernon wishes to avoid an unwelcome social obligation, or just get away for the weekend, he makes an ostensible visit to his "sick friend."He calls this Bunburying. Algernon's real-life best friend lives in the country but makes frequent visits to London. Algernon thinks his name is Ernest. But "Ernest" discloses that his visits to the city are also examples of Bunburying. In the country, "Ernest" goes by his real name, John, and pretends that he has a younger brother named Ernest, who lives in London. When John comes to the city, he assumes the name of Ernest and tells everyone he has a brother John who lives in the country.
The real problem arises when John wishes to marry Gwendolyn, who is Algernon's cousin. First, Gwendolyn seems to love him only because she believes his name is Ernest. Second, Gwendolyn's mother is the terrifying Lady Bracknell. Lady Bracknell is horrified when she learns that John, as a child, was discovered in a handbag at a railway station. Then, Algernon gets the idea to visit John in the country, pretending to be his younger brother "Ernest." Unfortunately, unknown to Algernon, John has announced the tragic death of Ernest.
A series of comic misunderstandings follow, as Algernon-as-Ernest visits the country and John shows up in his mourning clothes. There he encounters John's ward, Cecily, who believes herself in love with Ernest i.e. John's younger brother. On the other hand, Lady Bracknell is quite willing that Algernon shall marry Cecily and her fortune. Jack, however, as Cecily's guardian, refuses his consent unless Lady Bracknell permits his marriage to Gwendolyn. The anticlimax is complete with the appearance of Miss Prism who is recognized by Lady Bracknell. This leads to the identification of Jack Worthing as Algernon's lost elder brother, Ernest, thus settling matters to everyone's satisfaction.
The play has seen many adaptations over the years. In 1952, a film based on the play was directed by Anthony Asquith and starred Michael Dennison (Algernon), Michael Redgrave (John), Dame Edith Evans (Lady Bracknell), Dorothy Tutin (Cecily), Joan Greenwood (Gwendolen), and Margaret Rutherford (Miss Prism). There was a remake in 1992, directed by Kurt Baker. The 2002 remake stars Colin Firth (John), Rupert Everett (Algernon), Dame Judi Dench (Lady Bracknell), Reese Witherspoon (Cecily), Frances O'Connor (Gwendolen), Anna Massey (Miss Prism), and Tom Wilkinson (Dr. Chasuble) and was directed by Oliver Parker.
