The Fantasticks is a musical comedy written in 1960 with music by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones. Loosely based on the story "The Romancers" by Edmond Rostand, the plays first iteration was as "Joy Comes to Deadhorse", in 1956, at the University of New Mexico. It appeared on a list of new one-act-plays at Barnard College in August, in 1959, after a substantial rewriting. It got premiered on May 3 of 1960, in the Sullivan Street Playhouse, which is a small New York City off-Broadway theater, with Jerry Orbach in the role of the narrator. The play is stylized and also combines the touch of old-fashioned 40's Broadway style with a more modern, "fantastical" style. It is accompaniment by a piano and harp. On January 13, 2002, the show closed down. It holds the record of world's longest-running musical, and the longest-running show of any kind in the United States. A film based on the musical was released in 2000 but was not able to record the same success as the play. An off-Broadway revival of The Fantasticks opened in New York City on August 17, 2006.
Act I begins with the musical taking place in a small town, where a boy , Matt Hucklebee and a girl Luisa Bellomy, living next door to each other fall in love. Their romance is suppose to be kept as a secret from their feuding fathers, known simply as "Hucklebee" and "Bellomy". But latter the fact is revealed that the dispute between their fathers was a plot, which was suppose to bring their two children together by making them believe that their love was "forbidden fruit". To bring this disguise of dispute to an end, the fathers hire the services of rouge El Gallo, who is also the narratorof the play. Together they stage a fake abduction of Luisa, so that Matt can win the approval of Luisa's father by rescuing her. The plan is a success as the two families are united later on.

Murray Abraham, David Canary, Bert Lahr, Ricardo Monatalban, Elliot Gould and Liza Minnelli have been also associated with the production of The Fantasticks.
A revival of The Fantasticks opened at the off Broadway Snapple Theater Center in New York City, on August 17, 2006. it was directed by Tom Jones, who happens to be the writer of the show's lyrics and also appears in the role of "The Old Actor" under the stage name Thomas Bruce. The revival is produced by Steven Baruch, Marc Routh, Richard Frankel and Thomas Viertel.
