The 39 Steps was first a novel published in 1915 by British author and politician John Buchan. It tells the story of espionage and murder as characters travel on train to escape and uncover a political mystery. Legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock adapted it into a film in 1935. The British thriller starred Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll, Lucie Mannaheim, and Godfrey Tearle. There have been four major film adaptations from the novel, but Hitchcock's version is certainly the most known and well-received.
The play adaptation premiered in June of 2005. By playwright Patrick Barlow, the show premiered at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, where it was directed by Fiona Buffini. It was well-received, and went on to premiere in London at the Tricycle Theatre. The London opening night was August 10, 2006. The show was so well-received, that it transferred to the Criterion Theatre in London's prestigious West End in September 2006. The first US premiere of the play was produced through the Huntington Theater Company in Boston, and Boston University's Theatre in September of 2007. Finally, The 39 Steps came to Broadway to great acclaim, in what was supposed to be a limited run through the Roundabout Theatre Company at the American Airlines Theatre.
