The 39 Steps
The 39 Steps may have originally been a spy story that inspired the men in the trenches during World War I, battling the Germans, but the modern adaptation brings a more comical edge to the story. With four actors and somewhere between 100 and 150 roles, the play pokes fun at the spy genre and the works of Alfred Hitchcock. Tickets to the uproarious production are sure to entertain everyone in the audience as the main character, Richard Hannay, takes on the role of the everyday man thrust into an impossible situation in a bumbling light.
The stage adaptation was conceived by Patrick Barlow and uses four characters: Richard Hannay, Woman, Man 1, and Man 2. The parody premiered at the Wets Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds in June in 2005. Tickets went quickly for the 39 Steps and the production moved to the Criterion Theatre in the West End by September of 2006. The play has been recognized by the Olivier Awards, winning the Best Comedy in 2007 and found similar success upon moving to the United States.
