The Tap Dogs originated in a steel town north of Sydney, Australia. It is the brain child of Dein Perry who first envisioned the premise of the show from his garage. He worked as both an industrial machinist and a dancer in stage musicals before deciding to call his hometown pals and creating what has become an international touring extravaganza.
Tap Dogs debuted at the Sydney Theater Company on 7 January 1995 as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations for Sydney Theater Company's headquarters at Walsh Bay, Sydney. The Tap Dogs cast was led by Dein Perry, he was joined by six other performers, Darren Disney, Drew Kaluski, Ben Mayne, Ben Read, Nathan Sheens and Gerry Symonds. The work was originally produced by the Sydney Theater Company, was directed and designed by Nigel Triffit. Its composer and musical director was Andrew Wilkie and the lighting was originally provided by David Murray.

The show consists of six muscle-stacked builders taking to the stage and tapping out elaborate dance routines. Stomping amidst an industrial backdrop of scaffolding, steel sheeting and moveable platforms, this unlikely crew of hunks put the boot into traditional expectations of what a dance performance should be. They deliver 75 minutes of frenetic, eye-popping exertion in which every available surface including the ceiling is utilized. The performance is accompanied by crisp hailing tap, some funk, techno and even some heavy metal audio.
Since its first performance the show has toured continuously both in Australia and overseas and at times four groups of dancers have performed the work in different parts of the world. The name Tap Dogs has come to be used for both the show and for the group of performers. Tap Dogs, the show, has received several awards in Australia and overseas. For his choreography Dein Perry has also been the recipient of several awards including Olivier Awards in 1995 and 1996 and an Australian Dance Award in 1998. The lads have performed in the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games, where they were witnessed by 3.4 billion viewers across the globe.
