South Pacific Tickets for Sale
Before Broadway musicals were based on movies, they were based on these things called literature. In the case of South Pacific, the legendary team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein adapted a short story from James A. Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific. The musical would be a hit upon its debut in 1949 and would continue to sell out South Pacific tickets into the 21st century, bringing more Tony Awards and a few television specials in the musical’s honor.
The musical, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (the collection of short stories also won a Pulitzer), has had its soundtrack become an impressive list of popular standards. Six songs have at some time been among popular songs to sing live in concert or to listen to on the radio. These include “Bali Ha’I”, “I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hair”, and “I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy”.
In addition to the songs, the chance to portray one of the characters devised by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan has become the pinnacle of success for such actors and actresses as Reba McEntire and Alec Baldwin.
In particular, South Pacific has enjoyed a string of successful runs in the 21st century. The 2008 Broadway revival won an incredible seven Tony Awards and lasted two years and 996 regular performances. It did not leave because of waning interest either. The seats at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre were consistently sold out as critics and Broadway junkies alike raved about the production. A 2011 West End revival has received much the same treatment. Both big budget returns the stage inspired tours of those perspective countries.
One is never quite sure when another revival, either on Broadway or on tour, will be announced. These productions are sure to receive plenty of attention from the local cultural scene and be among the finalists for theater awards, especially the Tony Awards, the Drama Desk Awards, and the Laurence Olivier Award. Thus, whenever the chance to purchase South Pacific musical tickets arises, it is best to not take too long before getting the best seats possible.
