Plácido Domingo was born in Madrid on 21 January 1941, in a family of musicians and theater people. His father and mother were both renowned performers of Zarzuela, which is a Spanish form of operetta. His first step into opera came when his parents created a company of their own and he was made a part of it at the age of eight. Besides theater, the young Domingo also began to take his piano lesson to sharpen his musical elements.
To further his knowledge he was admitted into Mexico's National Conservatory of Music to learn piano and conducting, but was eventually shifted into vocal training after his voice was discovered. He made his operatic debut at Monterrey as Alfredo in "La Traviata" and then went on to perform with the Israel National Opera in Tel Aviv, singing 280 performances for 12 different roles. In 1968, he performed at the Metropolitan Opera for the first time, as Maurizio in ‘Adriana Lecouvreur' and since than he has appeared there in more than 590 performances of 42 different roles and currently he is in his 38th consecutive season with the company. He also makes regular appearances at all the big opera houses of the world, including Milan's La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, London's Covent Garden, Paris' Bastille Opera, the San Francisco Opera, Chicago's Lyric Opera, the Washington National Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, the Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, the Real in Madrid, and at the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals.

Be it be an opera, duet albums or cross-over material, and if it is Domingo's; then it's sure to appear on the best seller charts. His eight records have sold well over one million copies, ultimately achieving the gold status. In his recent recording, he has tried to bring out every ‘aria verdi' written for a tenor voice, it chiefly include excerpts from Wagner's "Siegfried" and "Götter-dämmerung". He has also brought out Puccini's early opera "Edgar" and a CD devoted mostly to Neapolitan songs, under the title "Italia ti amo".
