The Pirate Queen is a musical which is based on the life of pirate Grace O'Malley. This pirate was a 16th century Irish chieftain. She has been an important figure in Irish legend but was in fact a larger than life figure from Irish history of 16th century. Grace is sometimes called 'The Mother of all Rebellions' because she took part in many Irish rebellions. Her father was chieftain of the O'Malley clan. According to an Irish legend, when Grace was a young girl, she wished to go on a trading expedition to Spain with her father. But her father told her incapability because she had long hair which would catch in the ship's ropes. After being told this, she cut off her hair to embarrass her father into taking her, and thus earning her the nickname "Gráinne Mhaol" which means "bald" or having cropped hair. And this name stuck.
Grace was married twice in her life time. Once with Donal an Chogaidh at a very young age. She had three children with this marriage. After death of Donal, she remained in his castle and later married to Richard-an-Iarainn Burke, called "Richard-in-Iron", an appropriate corruption of his Irish name as he always wore a coat of mail. In the later 16th century with the steady increase in English power in Ireland, Grace's power was also progressed. Finally, in 1593, when her sons were captured by the English governor of Connaught, Grace sailed to England to petition Elizabeth I of England for their release. They agreed to a list of demands mutually. She most likely died at Rockfleet Castle in 1603, the same year as Elizabeth, though the year and place of her death are disputed.
The Pirate Queen is written by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil. These two great writers are best known for their adaptation of Les Misérables. John Dempsey is the co-lyricist of the musical.

The Pirate Queen made its debut performance at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theater on October 3, 2006 where it will run through November 26, 2006. This musical has attained a favorite response which has resulted in plan for A Broadway run to begin in 2007. Previews of Pirate Queen began at the Hilton Theater on March 2, with opening night on April 5. The musical will be directed by Tony Award winner Frank Galati. It is will be produced by Moya Doherty and John McColgan, creators of "Riverdance".
The play was announced in Chicago on November 3, 2005. At that time, Playbill wrote that Colm Wilkinson was in talks about the project but when principal casting was announced on May 12, 2006, Wilkinson was not among the announced cast. Native of Dublin, Colm Wilkinson is an Irish musical theater actor and singer, credibly famous for playing the role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables.
It will be for the first time for Boublil and Schönberg when have created a musical with American collaborators.
Many fictional portrayals have been inspired by the life of Grace, The pirate Queen. These include "Skye O'Malley" by Author Bertrice Small in which Grace is shown as kinswoman to the main character. Another is "The Pirate Queen: The Story of Grace O'Malley, an Irish Pirate" by Alan Gold. In June 2006 the Knock School of Irish Dancing did a Dance Drama called "Grainne O'Malley, The Pirate Queen"
